The intent of the Grades K–3 Literacy Achievement Academies and the Grades 4–5 Reading to Learn Academies is to enrich teachers’ knowledge and skills so they can best teach students how to achieve literacy mastery. All academies will provide evidence-based, effective, and systematic instructional practices. The focus of the Literacy Achievement Academies is phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. The focus for the Reading to Learn Academies is promoting literacy development, including reading comprehension and inferential and critical thinking, and writing development. An emphasis on differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students, including struggling learners, is a highlight of all the academies.
